Play PS games on your PC

Today, everyone is aware of ever-increasing interest in gaming among the new generation. Thus, there are many enterprises which regularly design novel, exciting and mind-boggling games for an unparalleled experience.  Especially for PlayStation (console) abbreviated as PS which is a home video game console thereby delivers an ultimate and mesmerizing gaming experience. But due to numerous reasons, many cannot purchase it. But guys from now no compromise. Even if you are missing your old favorites which cannot be downloaded on new PS3 or PS4, then here is a quick and easy guide for how to operate amazing PlayStation games using (downloading ) an emulator, a BIOS, and a ROM or two, on your personal computer!

The first thing we need to do is to install an emulator. You have many choices regarding which emulator you want to download like psxeven, RetroArch or the most popular ePSXe. In our opinion, too ePSXe is the best one available as it is updated quite often.

DOWNLOADING EMULATOR

To download ePSXe open ePSXe’s website and click the download icon in order to start the downloading process.  There you will find that no installer files are present therefore you can directly unlock the folder as well as move files on places of your choice. It is a 32-bit app. We created a folder in PROGRAM FILES and picked out files from there. If you operate a 32-bit Windows you can also follow the same method i.e. by saving the files in Program files folder.

Note: – All the ePSXe files should be kept in a single folder.

RUNNING THE APPLICATION

Now the next step after downloading as well as extracting files next thing you need to do is to run the app.  In ePSXe when you run it for the first time, eventually a dialog box will appear asking you for extraction of additional files. As asked, extract the additional files and fire up the ePSXe by double click on the app icon. You will see that it appears and feel like a PlayStation. After this what you ought to do is discussed below.

INSTALLING BIOS AND SETTING UP ePSXe

Now it’s time to install the BIOS. BIOS are required in order to boot games in personal computers. The point to be noted and remembered is that if you do not own a PSX then downloading BIOS is considered as piracy i.e. an unauthorized use of another’s work. For downloading the steps are very simple and are as follows:-

Step 1:- search online for BIOS as “epsxe HLE BIOS” and select the file named scph1001.bin.

Step 2:- After the download is completed carry the zipped file to BIOS folder in an ePSXe folder.

Step 3:- To check whether the process is going right or in the wrong way is that if all the procedures are done accurately then you will see SCPH1001.bin in C:\Program Files (x86)\ePSXe\bios. If you’re on 32-bit Windows, this will be in the Program Files folder instead. If something in previous steps went wrong this will not appear.

After this, the menus will pop-up with different graphics drivers and certain suggestions. If you operate Nvidia or AMD graphics card you need to select Pete’s OpenGL2 GPU core 2.0.0 and click Config. If the resulting window appears like a bunch of gibberish then simply click OK.

However, if you want to make changes like changes in resolution, frame rate limiting, textures, and many many more options are available here to increase gaming experience and reality as per your choice. If you don’t want to follow this method then you can also select FAST or NICE default. These defaults are present at the bottom of the window. Also if you are using a graphics card and if that graphics card is even close to Modern than you can run veer high settings easily, without any jerk.

When you have completed with all you setting its time to proceed further. After this click OK which is present at the bottom of the screen and afterward click next in configuration settings. And there is no need to have panic or dropping here more time than actually needed as if you feel any settings either textures, frame rate limiting, resolutions or any other, than these can be easily changed in future. Thus there always lies an option for adjusting config menu (settings) later.

SOUND AND CONTROLLER

The sound driver’s window also does the same for sound.  You can either choose the default ePSXe sound or click OK or you can choose (from the drop-down menu) Eternal SPU plug-in. There are many sound drivers options available. Now we recommend these two you can try and find the one you actually need. After completing click config for a few more settings and then click OK and Next. Now next thing we need to do is set up CD-ROM plugins.  If you are a Windows 10 user then select ePSXe CDR WNT/W2K core 2.0.0. And then click Next.

Finally, we need to set-up our controllers for playing the game. ePSXe supports a number of different controller setups.  First, let’s discuss how to set up keyboard or game board. For setting up keyboard/game board follow the steps written below:-

Step 1:- Select Click on Configuration >GamePads and then click Port 1 and finally select Pad 1.

Step 2:- After selection Pad 1 “Gamepad config” window will pop-up. Here you can configure primary controllers.

Here, you can see which key is linked with which button (control) in real i.e.  in  PlayStation 1 controller. (E.g. K=X). Click the field to change the control. After this press key of the keyboard or gamepad button you want to change.

(In short just click on a letter and tap the key you want to replace it with)

Step 3:- Repeat the previous steps until all your demand controls are customized. Click OK and then Next when you are satisfied with your controls.

You can also use separate controllers (other than keyboard or gamepad). We recommend DUALSHOCK

Step 4: It has a touch pad which reveals light bar from above alongside a matt finish. If you want to be submerged in PSX gaming experience you can definitely go for it. For setting up these controls simply select the dropdown menu in the right corner in order to select the device you will be using.

After this a dialog box will appear stating that ePSXe is configured! Therefore, it is time to get PSX games into our personal computer.

GETTING PS GAMES ON YOUR PC

Now the console (you can say PlayStation) is ready. The point we have noted in case of BIOS the same law applies for downloading games too; i.e. if you do not own the game and if you are downloading it you are actually committing an act of piracy (the unauthorized use of another’s work) by downloading it. If you really own the game through download away. There are numerous places from where you can download ROMs. You can download it either from Emuparadise (www.emuparadise.me) or Romulation (www.romulation.net). There are many other places from where you can download ROMs (like www.doperoms.com or www.thepiratebay.org).  However, Romulation is certainly better than Emuparadise because, for isos, Emuparadise uses codes that you cannot directly download, on the other hand, romulation can directly download them. Hence it (Romulation) is faster than Emuparadise.

After you have chosen the game you want to download and play in ePSXe then download the corresponding zip file. If you are confused which game to download you can go with our suggestions given below

  • Final Fantasy VII

  • Metal Gear Solid

  • Legacy of Kain

  • Final Fantasy IX

  • Valkyrie Profile

  • Xenogears

  • Tomb Raider

  • Spyro 2

  • Parasite Eve

  • Mega Man

Now after choosing the game and downloading the corresponding file is completed we need to do some more tasks. Further operations you need to do are as follows:

  1. The downloaded PlayStation file likely comes in a ZIP, RAR, 7Z, or ECM file.
  2. Now it is time to extract the file. For extracting the ISO file we recommend using 7-Zip as it is easy and free hence we earlier asked you to download it.
  3. After the ISO file is extracted analyze the file format. It should be known to you that ePSXe only supports ISO files that are in *.iso or *.bin format.
  4. If the downloaded PSX game comes in wired format NRG, IMG, UIF, DAA, CD or any other format then unfortunately ePSXe will be unable to support it. Therefore, it is important to search your games with compatible ISO files.
  5. After this go to files and click Run ISO. Have a search in your computer for ISO and then load it in the manner we have earlier loaded ROM. After the loading is over you can enjoy and live your virtual world of fantasy!

Note: – The game may not start immediately. Therefore you need to wait and control your excitement for a minute. If you are facing problems in loading refer troubleshooting.

You can also run the app by ejecting the CD of your PlayStation 1. However, we do not recommend using original PlayStation 1 game CD with ePSXe or any other PSX emulator (RetroArch, etc). There are two reasons for why we say so. Which are as follows:

  1. The process of using a real PlayStation 1 game CDs with ePSXe (or any other PSX emulator) is vulnerable to various problems.
  2. You will face irritating slow loading that ruins the experience of gaming.

For solving this you can rip your PlayStation 1 CD to a “BIN/CUE” ISO. Besides extinguishing the problems it also gives you dual benefit, that is:

  1. After ripping you PlayStation 1 CD you will have a lot of space on your hard disk.
  2. Also, you will have a digital backup of your games which is indeed great. For in case the actual CD (physical copy) is either broken or lost you, then there is no actual or proximate loss incurred.

PLAYING ePSXe GAMES USING COMPACT DISK (CD)

Anyway if you do not want to play games through your PlayStation 1 CD the steps are written below:

Step 1: Firstly the CDR plug-in needs to be settled.

Step2: Then go to Config then CD-ROM and afterward select the CDR plug-in.

Step3: In order to load the game, insert the game CD in CD-ROM drive.

Step4: Lastly in ePSXe go to File & Run CDROM. And within few minutes you can start playing.

Note:-The game may not load immediately. Therefore you need to wait and control your excitement for a minute.

FEW TIPS FOR A SMOOTHER EXPERIENCE OF ePSXe

Here are some basic commands for a smoother and better experience of ePSXe. These are written below

  • To get out of emulation press Esc. Right after the moment, you have pressed it you will be transported to the main screen. From here you can adjust options
  • Similarly, in order to get back into your virtual world (game) click run and they continue.
  • From the main menu, you can also save and load games from the run menu.
  • If you are playing the game with more than one disk then you can switch (change) the disk by going to file and then clicking in change disk.

ePSXE’s experience can be enhanced by adding additional plugins. But it really matters to realize which plugin is suitable and apt for you.Like if you want an additional plugin on a low power PC you can go for Pete’s 3D driver for graphics. Best settings depend upon the game. The easiest way to find most appropriate setting is having a google search. You can search for settings for “name of the game (like dragon ball) ePSXe setting”. For finding more about this you can explore more in web or try and experience them because it’s all about experiencing new dimensions of human creation.
