First Impressions and Unboxing
The Life Jacket comes in a rectangular box made of plastic and looks like a rock placed inside the blue box. Main features of the speaker are listed on the front of the box and the other features are printed on the other side of the box.
Once you unbox the package, you will find the Altec Lansing Life Jacket, a USB cable, an AC adapter (charger), a 3.5 mm to 3.5 mm auxiliary cable, a carrying case along with some documents like quick start guide.
The speaker weighs around 700 grams and measures 8 x 3.2 x 3.2 inches. With the rectangular shape and octagonal design, Altec gave it a military looking design that looks pretty awesome. At the front, the speaker has two forward speakers protected by metal grills. At the center, you will find the branding of Aztec and two LEDs, one informs you about Bluetooth connectivity and the other lets you know about the charging.
If we come at the top face of this speaker, you will see a total of three buttons viz. power button and volume rockers. To the left of the power button, you can find the NFC pad for NFC (Near Field Communication) connectivity. This allows the nearby Bluetooth devices to pair with ease. And at the top right section, there’s another logo for the branding of Altec.
If we talk about the back of the speaker, there you can find a passive radiator for extraordinary bass. Full Review with pros and cons
As this is an electronic device, you need to set it up to use it flawlessly. To set up this speaker you need to charge it initially, for around 4 hours until it gets fully charged. While charging the LED will be illuminating orange and once done it automatically gets turned off. As soon as you are done, you need to power it on. At the first time, you need to pair the speaker with your device. Press and hold the power for a couple of seconds to turn on pairing.
Now enter into the Settings of your device, no matter if it is powered by Android, iOS, Windows or anything else. Look for the Bluetooth Settings and turn on Bluetooth pairing and search for the devices. You will find IMW575 (model no. of Life Jacket) as a device ready to pair. In case you have a device that supports NFC connectivity then put your phone on the NFC pad to connect it to the speaker. Now once connected the Life Jacket is ready to play music, answer phone calls or function as a portable charger.
The connecting and pairing is simple like hell and easily gets paired with any Bluetooth enabled device. For a relatively small speaker, the output sound was pretty awesome and it sounds quite well. It was easily able to play quite loud music at a fair loud voice flawlessly.
But there is an issue with the Life Jacket that may or may not disappoint you. Although you have the option to control volume you don’t have any option to play or pause or change the track from the speaker itself. Almost all other Bluetooth speakers have these options but the Life Jacket lacks it.
Apart from this, you don’t get any kind of user manual or instructions guide other than the Quick start guide that too is not much informative. So you might not be able to take full advantages of the Life Jacket. However when I looked for the user manual I got a PDF file, you can also download it from here and get more information about this Bluetooth speaker.
To answer a phone call, you can either tap the power button gently or say ANSWER verbally. And to end the ongoing call, just tap the power button once again. Apart from this, we tried to use Google Assistant and Siri with this one but it didn’t work.
If we talk about the quality of the speakerphone, it is slightly echoic and distant, just like other speakerphones. Calls made using the speakerphone of the Life Jacket sounds passable for both, the caller and receiver. It does not sound that worse but it will be better to use the phone directly to make phone calls.
Then another feature of the Life Jacket is that it can charge your USB powered devices using the USB port with ease. In this, it performed very well. Although I would never carry it with me just for charging some device as it is a little big in size for that job and heavy as well. But it works very well when you need an emergent charger, especially when you are carrying this portable speaker in your backpack.
If we talk about the robustness of this speaker, the Life Jacket is IP 67 certified. This means that this speaker. This means that the speaker can easily survive underwater for an immersion of up to 1 meter. The rubber coating that protects the speaker is washable. I tried to dunk the speaker underwater for several minutes a couple of times, still, it works fine and flawlessly. Also due to the rubber, the speaker floats on water and so it won’t get damaged easily.
- Works as a speakerphone
- Works as a portable charger too
- 16+ hours of battery life
- NFC pairing enabled
- IP 67 certified water and shockproof.
- Minimal music playback controls
- Limited speakerphone controls
Altec Lansing Life Jacket Bluetooth Speaker: Conclusion
There are a lot of speakers available in the market at this price range but this one is something different, as described in the article. Although it didn’t work very well in some aspects overall I liked the speaker at this price. It is a rugged and portable speaker that is relatively light in weight and performs very well with high pitched sounds and high bass music.
